Awaryjny Słoik – Innovative Pilot Within the European Change(K)now! Project

Awaryjny Słoik is a pilot implementation by Challengeen Sp. z o.o. carried out as part of the international Change(K)now! project, co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region program.

What is the Change(K)now! Project?

The Change(K)now! project (November 2023 – October 2026) aims to change the perception of the food supply system and transition from single-use to a circular economy or reusable system in the Baltic Sea Region countries.

The project helps cities and municipalities reduce the amount of single-use packaging in:

  • 🎪 Green events and food fairs
  • 🍱 Take-away gastronomy and food delivery
  • 🏢 Institutional catering in public entities
  • 🌍 Local food markets and public gastronomy

Awaryjny Słoik is Poland's answer to these challenges – a functioning circular economy solution that combines reverse vending machine technology with local food production and logistics optimization.

Sustainable Office Catering is Not a Cost – It's an Investment in the Future

If you're considering implementing a catering solution in your company that will truly impact carbon footprint reduction, we have concrete data for you. Not promises, not visions – numbers.

The Awaryjny Słoik Model: How Does It Work?

Our system is a closed loop of reusable packaging circulation:

  1. Local producers prepare meals in standardized glass jars.
  2. A logistics operator delivers ready-made dishes to 25–30 points simultaneously (using existing refrigerated fleet).
  3. Employees consume meals and return empty jars to a reverse vending machine in the office.
  4. The operator collects empty jars during the next delivery and returns them to the producer.
  5. The cycle closes – the same jar can be used up to 20 times, and the lid up to 3 times.

LCA Comparison: Awaryjny Słoik vs. Traditional Take-Away Catering

Awaryjny Słoik System

  • 25–30 points served on one route
  • 100 jars per week per point (mix: 80% small 600g, 20% large 1300g)
  • Transport: Fiat Ducato with refrigeration (2 trips per week, full loading)
  • Total transport mass: ~1 ton of jars per route
  • Lifespan: jar – 20 cycles, lid – 3 cycles
  • Local production: max. 10 km from pickup point

Traditional Take-Away Catering

  • Single or small deliveries (max 5 meals per trip)
  • Single-use packaging (plastic/paper/foil)
  • Smaller vehicle, but many more trips
  • No route optimization
  • Packaging ends up in waste (even with partial recycling)

Key Environmental Benefits

1. Dramatic Waste Reduction

  • Zero single-use packaging – with 100 meals per week at one point, that's 5,200 packages annually that DON'T end up in landfills.
  • Even with 30% recycling, 3,640 pieces annually end up as waste.

2. Transport Optimization = Lower Carbon Footprint

  • Delivery consolidation: one trip for 25–30 points vs. dozens of individual deliveries.
  • Use of existing infrastructure – the operator is traveling with products anyway.
  • Full load utilization – optimized transport, no empty runs.
  • Local production: short supply chains (max. 10 km).

3. Reusable vs. Single-Use

  • Reusable glass has significantly lower environmental impact than plastic/paper.
  • 1 jar replaces 20 single-use packages.
  • Premium material (glass) = no microplastics, full biodegradability at end of life.
